DMX Fundamentals

Before patching fixtures, it is important to understand how MadMapper communicates with your physical lighting hardware.

DMX Preferences: To route your lighting data, navigate to Preferences > Project (tab) > DMX. Here you can select your network interface, choose your USB DMX device, Art-Net or sACN, and define your framerate to ensure smooth playback across your rig.

Current hardware supported by MadMapper are the following USB DMX Devices: garageCube, ShowJockey, Enttec DMX USB Pro, Enttec DMX USB Pro MK2, and the DMX King eDMX2 Pro, and network based devices that support Art-Net or sACN.

Output Configuration: To route your lighting data, navigate to Preferences > Project (tab) > DMX. Here you can select your network interface, choose your USB DMX device, Art-Net or sACN, and define your framerate to ensure smooth playback across your rig.

DMX Fixtures Basics

DMX fixtures allow you to create and manage your fixtures for your light mapping projects.

By adding fixtures you will need to replicate your physical lighting installation in MadMapper.

Since MadMapper 6, DMX fixtures are sampling the output composition.

Location

Access the DMX fixtures by clicking on DMX (manage DMX fixtures) at the top left of the interface:

Keyboard shortcut: Cmd + 4

New DMX Fixture

Simply click on the DMX fixture of your choice to add one:

Created fixtures retain the same profile and follow the addressing.

More info below as well as in the MadLight Documentation.

DMX Fixtures List

Added DMX fixtures (and groups) will be listed on the left in the DMX fixtures List:

Simply double-click on a DMX fixture name to rename it.

Other options are:

Locking a DMX fixture is useful when you don’t want to change its settings anymore—it will avoid accidents.

The highlighted DMX fixture or group is also the one that is selected.

Note that DMX Fixtures can be moved around in the fixtures list, but a fixture will overwrite the one below it because there are no opacity settings for fixtures.

You can’t define two fixtures on top of each other and play with the opacity, it will overwrite it instead.

Create Groups

You can create a group with as many DMX fixtures as you want by clicking on the Groups icon at top right of the DMX fixture list:

This is very useful for grouping your fixtures by universes.

Note that you can also drag your surfaces directly into a group, no matter what type they are.

Or select a group of surfaces, then click on the group icon while holding the Shift key.

A group will be created with the selected surfaces in the same location.

As with Video Surfaces, DMX fixtures behave as layers as well.
